Challenge goals

I’ve decided to revise my original goals for this month.

I’ve been making more progress on listening than on my Anki or speaking so I’ll focus more on that in the next ten days instead of trying to finish my Anki and speaking goals in time.

Hebrew today

I spent two hours studying Hebrew today with a friend and teacher. — I was mostly trying to understand a couple articles written in Hebrew. . . but we spent a bunch of time talking about things in Hebrew both while we were studying and before and afterwards.

I haven’t had so much Hebrew speaking practice in a while — and it was very nice to be able to understand and take part in the conversations. (Even though it was at a rather limited level.)

My listening focus the last several weeks has really helped. I find myself suddenly understanding rather long sentences even when I don’t know all the words or exactly what grammatical construction is being used. I want to keep up my focusing on listening . . . Even though it’s nice to feel the improvement, I still have a ways to go. 🙂

Emails, Drama & Animation

I wrote a bunch of emails in Hebrew today. Actually when I get down to it is not as hard as it feels before I’ve started anything.

I’m keeping on looking for fun dramas to watch. I’ve been watching a bit of a Japanese animation translated in Hebrew – סיילור מוןEven though there aren’t any subtitles I’m finding it a lot easier to understand the dialogue and what is going on than the other dramas or comedy shows I’ve been watching. Perhaps its partly because it’s written for children. The fact that it is translated might also mean the sentence structure and word choice is easier than other stuff. I want to watch all of סיילור מון and see if I can find other Japanese anime dubbed in Hebrew. . . I’m sure I’ll get tired of watching more than a hundred of these episodes. . . even though I can follow the story pretty well.

One thing I like about the animation is that there’s much more dialogue in a regular animation episode compared to a drama episode. And the speaking tends to be faster.

One drama I have enjoyed though is גיא אוני . It seems to be set (if my interpretation is right) in Israel a long time ago when Jews were first coming here and settling the land (seventy, eighty years ago?). Perhaps because its historical (I love history) I’ve found it quite intriguing, although unfortunately I’ve only found the fourth episode online. frown Hopefully I can find the first three episodes somewhere.

Slow going

Hebrew study is going rather slowish at the moment.

Yesterday I spent a lot of time watching different drama episodes that I found on youtube — and downloading them to my harddrive so I can clip, edit, and work with them more. I haven’t found a good easy way to mine sentences from dramas. I have to find out how to do this simply (the hard part is getting the audio) and then make sure that some of the sentences I add every day are from dramas I’ve been watching.

Day 6

I put more advertisements up for language helpers. And I have one of Hebrew practice scheduled for Saturday.. . . 🙂 Still need many more helpers though.

Yesterday I went to the university library, met a Korean friend in the morning and then spent the afternoon on Anki (mostly) and a little bit of time on some anime I found. Anki takes so long. . . I want to try to find an easier way to input them with audio. In some ways the time spent is worth it because I’m hearing the segment several times and really processing it instead of just inputting it into my deck. On the other hand I really want to get more cards in my deck fast!

I woke up with a cold this morning. I’ll have to drink lots of water and tea the next few days. I have a short month ahead to learn a lot of Hebrew and I don’t want to be sniffing my way through it. 🙂

Day 4

I finished all my backed up reviews. The new anki cards were from the song אחרת אתה מת.

Anki: 72 minutes
New Anki: 20

New Anki Sentences: 20/2000

Headachy. . . and today’s goals

I’m headachy today and am rather frustrated with the amount of language study I’ve been able to get done so far today.

Things to do today:

  • Lots of Anki
  • One hour lesson with Hebrew tutor
  • Contact more people for language practice sessions.
  • Finish transcription for the monologue I already got.
  • Find another monologue to take down as a dictation.

About Anki. I was able to do a bunch of reviews yesterday but I didn’t add any new cards. I need to add a substantial amount of cards every day to get to my monthly goal. We’ll see if I can make up today some of what I didn’t do yesterday.

Dictation. I found dictation quite helpful when I did it a few days ago. (Even though I did quite badly.) I want to make it regular part of my study routine. After I transcribe as much of the audio as I can I upload it to lang-8 and ask some of the proofreaders to correct and fill in the missing parts. Later I can put this same audio and transcript into Learning with Texts to further massage.
