Anki

I had a fun lesson today on skype. We were working on computer and technology words, so lots of talking about mice, keyboards, earphones, etc. I want to make sentences with them, and put them in anki with audio.

I also walked around reviewing anki cards. Unfortunately I lost my review when I synced with the online version. No big deal though — an extra review or two doesn’t hurt anybody.smile

I wrote a diary in Hebrew.

I also scheduled a Skype lesson with a friend from Italki.

Motivation and Energy

The last month hasn’t been as good as I wanted it to be with respect to Hebrew study. I”ve been having a hard time staying motivated to completely immerse myself Hebrew. As a result my Hebrew has been more of a here-and-there thing instead of something I”m involved with the whole day long. I”ve also had a hard time setting up time to schedule speaking practice sessions.

However, I”ve been keeping on listening to Hebrew songs, speaking in Hebrew with people outside, and reading newspaper articles and using Anki. Except for last week I”ve been continuing with my Skype Hebrew lessons.

Since I can do Anki on my ipod I want to start taking walks to review my anki phrases. I”ve read somewhere that the brain can remember things better when you are doing some kind of exercise.

Language learning, at least for me, is about motivation and energy more than anything else. If I have good strategies and put in the time I will learn the language. The key is to keep up the motivation to keep plugging away, even when the going gets hard.wink One of the ways I”ve found useful for maintaining motivation is reading articles on language learning. In that vein, I found a very wonderful site with useful language articles, including an article on 25 ways to find comprehensible input. I’m going to try to use those ideas in the next few weeks.

I’ve been able to schedule two hours of lessons  and four hours of conversation practice for next week. I still want to schedule a bit more practice both online and off.

I’m continuing to use Learn with Texts. I would like to use Rhinospike to get  recordings for Hebrew texts, but so far I haven’t had that much luck with it.

However, a few days ago someone on Fivers.com graciously recorded ten pages of Hebrew text for five dollars. I put the text and audio in Learning With Texts, and as I keep massaging it I’ll start putting interesting sentences into Anki to review.

Keeping at it^^

I worked with Learning with Texts a bunch today which was quite a lot of fun. There were several audio recordings in Rhinospike that I found useful. Before Learning with Texts came around I never knew how to organise my texts and audio. . . now it’s very easy.

I also found youtube clip of a drama online with subtitles. . .I copied the subtitles down, made an mp3 of the video. and also included that in my database.

Frustrating language learning

The last few weeks have been extremely frustrating for language study.  Part of the problem is that its the holiday season here in Israel (somewhat equivalent to Christmas and New Year’s in other parts of the world). Aa result, most shops and restaurants are closed. Several days of the week the streets are empty with barely a soul in sight as people celebrate with their families.

I have been continuing my Skype classes and keeping on learning the words given there. I’ve also been watching lots of Hebrew youtube videos, trying to follow the dialogue. Its fun — slowly, bits and pieces of the language are starting to make sense.

I’ve been meaning to immerse myself in Hebrew, and some days are definitely better than others in that regard. It’s something I want to keep working on in the next few days.

Crazy Internet

I found a great way to listen to all kinds of Hebrew music (and discover loads of nice new songs) — Groovshark. The sound quality is amazing. It’s definitely the best way I’ve found so far to find new albums and artists I like. The frustrating thing is with the internet being the way it is (in this new place I moved to). . . even simple things like listening to music (or posting in blog entries) can become very frustrating.

Today is Shabbat but tomorrow I want to try and get internet directly to my place. . . it’s quite essential for my language study.

I also want to put up new advertisements tomorrow for language helpers.
